Member Agencies
Second Harvest welcomes the opportunity to expand the network. The requirements for becoming a member of the food bank are:
- The agency must be a non-private charitable organization holding a 501(c)(3) determination (or be "umbrella'ed" by a 501(c)(3) organization), or be a church as determined by Internal Revenue Service guidelines.
- The majority of clients served by the agency must be needy, meeting income guidelines specified by the United States Department of Agriculture (150% of current federal poverty level).
- The agency must agree to follow Second Harvest guidelines for record keeping, sanitation, and safe food storage.
Second Harvest member agencies include Emergency Food Providers (soup kitchens, emergency pantries and shelters), Residential Programs (group homes and residential rehabilitation centers), Low-Income Child Care and Senior Citizen Centers, Day and Transitional Programs for Adults with Fixed or Low Incomes, and other agencies serving the target population.
In 2004, our member agencies served approximately 50,000 individuals each month. Nearly ½ of those served are children. Fifteen percent are senior citizens.
