The job of feeding the needy is a big one and requires a lot of hands. If you are able-bodied and can spare the time, volunteer.
Donations of cash are always welcome. Every dollar donated to SHFB allows us to distribute about 15 pounds worth of food! Your check for $35 will provide abundant food for a family of 4 for two weeks! Cash goes a lot further than cans! If you'd really like to help, please write a check, or consider having a "fund" drive.
Community food drives like those conducted by the Boy Scouts in the fall and the National Association of Letter Carriers in the spring provide us with large quantities of food each. You can support these drives without ever leaving your house! Watch for information where you live.
We accept the proceeds of smaller food drives at schools, churches, and organizations as well. If you would like to hold a food drive, please call us first (610-434-0875) for assistance and to let us know your plans. Our Wish List of current needs is also available. We appreciate all donations of nonperishable foods that are "in code" and unopened. Food that is in opened containers or obviously beyond safe consumption should not be donated. It will be discarded, adding to our operating costs. We cannot accept home canned or home processed foods.
We also accept nonfood necessities like diapers, toilet tissue, and laundry detergent in unopened original packaging. During the growing season, we are happy to accept fresh produce.
Check Out Hunger, a grocery store-based fundraiser, allows shoppers to donate at the checkout through the purchase of a bar-coded coupon or hang up. All proceeds from area stores' Check Out Hunger solicitations are given to Second Harvest at the end of the campaign. Watch for the Check Out Hunger display in your favorite supermarket or convenience store from the beginning of October to the end of December.
